Isaac Home Energy Performance (IHEP) carefully inspects your home to identify all energy-related issues, then prioritizes smarter solutions for you. We give your house a “physical,” then prescribe exactly the steps you should take to save money and energy while living greener and more comfortably. IHEP: providing New York energy efficiency solutions to the Rochester area.

What size air conditioner do I need?

Installing a correctly sized air condition system is critical to its proper function. Bigger is not better. An oversized system will cost more to operate and will cycle too briefly to effectively remove household humidity. An undersized unit will not cool your home on the hottest of days. Correct sizing is essential.
Another choice you must make is the level of energy efficiency. Higher efficient systems cost more, but they operate more efficiently and use less electricity. Home size, design, location, amount and type of insulation, ceiling height, as well as the number and size of windows and doors will all impact your cooling needs.
An Isaac Field Representative can best advise you on the correct air conditioning solution for your home. He will perform a home cooling assessment and present options for your specific comfort needs. Contact us at (585) 546-1400 or comfort@IsaacHeating.com to schedule a free estimate.

How does an air conditioner work?

Air conditioning systems cool your home by moving excessive indoor heat to outside your home where it is dispersed into the air. Air condition will also lower home humidity to further improve your comfort.
Household air is drawn down the return-air ducts to your furnace where it passes over a cold evaporator coil. The heat from the household air naturally moves to the cold coil and is then transported in refrigerant lines to the condenser unit outside. The fan in that unit pulls air through the hot condenser coil to dissipate the excess heat into the outdoor air.
Meanwhile, as the indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture in that air condenses onto the coil and turns to a liquid. This liquid leaves via a drain, leaving the air returning to your home living spaces dryer and more comfortable.

Fall and Winter Energy Savings and Heating Efficiency Tips

Practical ideas from Isaac on how to be more comfortable and save money during the fall, winter and heating seasons.
  • Set your thermostat properly or invest in a programmable thermostat. The most economical operation of your system comes from setting the thermostat properly. Set the thermostat at the highest summer setting or the lowest winter setting at which you are comfortable. Typical settings are 78 degrees for summer cooling and 68 degrees for winter heating. When cooling, your operating costs increase from 3% to 8% for each degree your thermostat is lowered. When heating, your operating costs increase similarly for each degree your thermostat is raised.
  • Keep the air filter clean. The easiest way to ensure your system operates efficiently and economically is by keeping the air filter clean. There are several types of air filters and several possible locations for the air filter. Ask your service technician next time he’s out at your home to show you where your air filter is located and which type of filter to use. If you have allergies, you should look at a pleated allergy filter or a media or electronic style air cleaner.
  • Keep doors and windows closed. Close all doors and windows to the outside. This will reduce the heating load in the winter and the cooling load in the summer. Your system will operate more economically as a result.
  • Make sure vents and grills are unobstructed. Arrange your furniture and drapes so that all output vents and intake grilles are free from obstruction. This will reduce the cooling and heating load on your system for more economical operation.
  • Avoid excessive use of exhaust fans. Excessive use of kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans will make your system work harder. This will increase energy consumption and costs. Keep costs in check by making wise use of exhaust fans.

Energy Saving Products and Services

Home energy performance is based on building science that tells us your house is a system made up of smaller systems that all work together. Therefore any time you adjust or change one part it, it affects the other parts. We offer a comprehensive list of improvements that are designed to work together to give you a safe, efficient and comfortable home.

Air Sealing

Air Leakage represents up to 4O% of energy loss costs in your home. It also gives your home that drafty feeling. Air sealing is the most cost effective way you can increase energy efficiency in your home. Your home acts like a chimney with heat always rising up through the interior of your home, up through your attic while being replaced by outside air coming in through holes in the basement. We can seal those holes and slow down the air leakage, thus keeping the conditioned air you paid for in the home longer and allowing your heating and cooling equipment to run less. Some of the specific areas our insulators target and seal are rim joists, electrical, plumbing & heat duct penetrations and any other areas that allow air to enter or exit your home.
Benefits:
  • Save energy
  • Increase comfort
  • Reduce vermin access to the indoors
  • Enhance fire safety

Insulation

Heat transmission is the leading cause of winter heat loss for the average home. Insulation slows heat transmission through the floor, walls and ceiling. A properly insulated home will be more comfortable with less temperature variations throughout your home. Proper insulation levels are essential to an energy efficient and comfortable home. Our Energy consultant’s custom design insulation improvements for your home using energy star guidelines. Because every home is different, we offer a number of insulation options including cellulose, 2-part spray foam, and fiberglass. Our professionally trained insulation crews provide top quality work while making sure your home is protected.
Services:
  • Attic Insulation
  • Exterior Wall Insulation
  • Rim Joist Insulation
Benefits:
  • Save Energy
  • Enhance Comfort
  • Add Structural Strength
  • Reduce noise

Attic Ventilation

Poor attic ventilation contributes to shortened roof life, mold and mildew on your roof deck, and icicles. Your attic should be closed to the outdoor temperature in the winter months and removing excess moisture is critical. Home builders often cut costs by venting bath fans to the attic rather than the outdoors. When warm, moist air is introduced to a cold attic, moisture collects on the roof deck damaging it and creating mold. The warm air also melts the snow on your roof which freezes at the gutter creating icicles. Your Isaac energy consultant will calculate the proper ventilation needed for your attic. Our insulation crews will install soffit, static or gable ventilation and add the proper materials and terminations to your bath vents.
Services:
  • Attic ventilation (soffit, static gable and bath fan)
Benefits:
  • Control moisture migration
  • Increase roof life
  • Reduce icicles
  • More even temperatures during the cooling season

Glass Block Windows

We offer a number of different styles of glass block windows. Glass block windows are a great way to improve the safety of your home while also increasing your homes efficiency. Leaky basement windows are one of the ways cold air infiltrates your home in the winter.

Heating & Cooling Equipment

Isaac is the authority on Heating and cooling equipment with over 68 years in the industry. Through our auditing process we can properly size your equipment for the way your home currently sits as well as how insulation and air sealing improvements will affect the sizing. With efficiencies up to 95% on new equipment it can start paying for itself in a relatively short period of time. With all of the new technology available you will increase efficiency while increasing your comfort. Our installation teams are the most knowledgeable and well equipped in the industry. Our installation mechanics go to Isaac University weekly to stay up to date on the latest industry changes.
Services:
  • Furnaces
  • Boilers
  • Air Conditioning
  • Generators
  • Water Heating
  • Electrical Services
Benefits:
  • Comfort
  • Efficiency
  • Safety

Renewable Energy

Green Energy is here to stay; it’s a great way to save money while decreasing your carbon footprint. Federal and State Tax credits and rebates make renewable energy more affordable than ever.
Geothermal
Uses the earth to heat and cool your home. This is a great option for oil and propane customers and can save you up to 75% of your heating, cooling and hot water costs.
Installing a geothermal system can offset your energy costs while helping the environment by using a natural heat source to heat your home.
Using a single geothermal heat pump is equivalent to planting an acre of trees.
Federal credits are available up to 3O%.
Solar
Installing solar can offset your electric bill by 50-85%, with electric costs on the rise every year; there’s never been more of a reason to go green. There is a misconception that New York isn’t a good region for solar but the truth is we product 10% over what the systems are rated for and the best time to make power is on a cold clear day.
NYSERDA offers incentives up to $1O,5OO.OO per household.
The federal government offers a 3O% credit and NY State a 25% credit

Isaac Heating & Air Conditioning Adds “Pink Ribbon” Service Van to Raise Awareness for Cancer

(Rochester, NY) – Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning has a new van on the road that displays a pink ribbon and paint to help raise greater awareness of cancer and cancer research. The van is being driven by one of Isaac’s female technicians, Clarivette Gonzalez.

“Both of my parents are cancer survivors,” noted Isaac President and CEO Ray Isaac. “The idea for the van was suggested by Bill Isaac, one of our owners, and there are so many people affected by cancer, either personally or through relatives and friends. As the van will be seen by many around Rochester and Monroe County, we felt it was a strong gesture of our ongoing support to drive awareness in the fight against cancer.”

Many Isaac employees take part in cancer awareness fundraising activities, and the Isaac organization also contributes annually to cancer research. Tom Ewing, the owner of Ewing Graphics – the firm that applies graphics to all of Isaac’s fleet of vans and vehicles – donated the labor for the pink van effort.

“We have a great many female employees and they were extremlely enthusiastic about this effort,” said Isaac Vice President of Operations Eric Knaak. “Clarivette Gonzalez, who is currently driving the fan, is very pleased to be creating greater awareness as she goes about her job.”

Energy Saving Tips

The following tips will save you energy and help your budget during warmer weather.

  • Look for ENERGY STAR air conditioners. They are the most energy efficient models on the market.
  • Replacing your old central air conditioner with a new ENERGY STAR qualified model can reduce your cooling costs by 20 percent.
  • If possible, keep your room air conditioner out of the sun. Room air conditioners work best when kept cool. Installing one in a north-facing wall is usually ideal.
  • If you have central air conditioning, keep your thermostat at 78 degrees. You can also save approximately an additional six to seven percent off your cooling costs for each degree above 78.
  • If your air conditioner does not have a thermostat, adjust it to a lower setting, or combine using it with a window or ceiling fan to cool things down.
  • Consider installing a ceiling fan.  During hot weather a ceiling fan will create a cool breeze and keep the air circulating in your home.
  • Get rid of hot air. Use an exhaust fan to blow hot air out of your kitchen while you’re cooking. The savings on your cooling costs far outweigh the electricity used by the fan. Also, take lukewarm showers and baths to avoid humid air, which holds more heat.
  • A dehumidifier can greatly add to your electric bill. Make sure you have the appropriate sized dehumidifier for your home.
  • Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day. This keeps the strong sunlight from heating your home.
  • Use your microwave or countertop appliances for cooking instead of the oven or stove.
  • What says summer better than burgers and hot dogs? Instead of using your oven or stove, which can generate heat on an already hot day, fire up the outdoor grill for cooking. You can also use your microwave or other countertop appliances in place of the stove or oven.
  • Turn your water heater down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit to save money on your electricity bill.  If you have children in the house, this is also a safety measure.
  • Install ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent light bulbs in your most-used fixtures and lamps. Fluorescent bulbs put out less heat, plus you’ll save $30 to $40 in energy costs over the life of each bulb.
  • Check your heating and cooling system to make sure it is operating at peak efficiency.
  • Postpone laundry and dishwashing until nighttime to avoid generating extra heat in your home. Also, consider taking advantage of the warmer air and dry your laundry outside.
  • Don’t forget about your own energy. Wearing lighter clothing can help cool you down without turning on the air conditioner. Also, remember to stay hydrated during extreme temperatures.
  • If you have a pool, turn off your filter overnight when the pool is not in use.

12 air conditioner tips to beat the heat

  1. Call a professional: Each central air conditioning unit should be inspected, cleaned and tuned by a professional. A professional tune-up typically costs between $70 and $125.
  2. Keep the filter clean: Clean and replace the air conditioner filter
frequently (check the filter once a month). This is especially important during the summer when dust and allergens circulate. If the filter becomes clogged, your system will have to work harder to supply the same amount of cool air.
  3. Made in the shade: Air conditioners with proper shading can be more efficient. Air in a shaded space is cooler than the surrounding air, meaning the A/C will have an easier time cooling the air.
  4. Don’t take the heat: Don’t place lamps, TV sets, or other heat producing appliances near your thermostat. The thermostat senses the heat causing the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  5. Dial for dollars: Remember that each degree you dial below 78 increases your energy consumption by about 8 percent. If your monthly electric bill is about $100, you’ll save $8 a month with EACH degree you can stand above 78.
  6. Set and go: If it’s hard to remember to tweak your thermostat before you leave for work, consider investing in a programmable thermostat or a timer for your window unit.
  7. Time to replace? You may find your old air conditioner is no longer efficient. Consider replacing your unit with an energy-efficient model. They’re usually more expensive but thanks to federal tax credits and competitive prices, the prices are falling, and because they use less energy, you save in the long-run, too. When replacing your A/C, look for a properly sized unit. If you install a unit that is too large, it will cycle on and off – reducing the efficiency of the system.
  8. Don’t cool the whole neighborhood: Seal air leaks with caulking and weather-stripping. Add insulation around air conditioning ducts.
  9. Feel the breeze: If your home has ceiling fans, switch your ceiling fan to run counterclockwise in the summer. That will push the cool air down. You can run a ceiling fan half the day for about $1.50 a month, compared to $25 for an air conditioner.
  10. Watch the pavement: Avoid landscaping with lots of rock, cement, or asphalt on the south or west sides of your home. If it’s not shaded it will increase the temperature around the house and radiate heat.
  11. Free from debris: Keep plants, shrubs, and other landscaping about two to four feet away from your outdoor unit to ensure adequate airflow.
  12. Install window film: A great home improvement idea is to install home window film or tint to the insides of your windows. Not only can it help keep your house cooler in the summer, but also warmer in the winter.

How do I know if there is carbon monoxide in my home?

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in country. Odorless, tasteless and invisible – carbon monoxide is a silent killer. The safe way to know if carbon monoxide is present is to install carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, particularly around sleeping areas.
Effective February 22, 2010, Amanda’s Law (NYS Code) requires that ALL NEW AND EXISTING residential dwellings that have fuel-burning appliances in the dwelling or attached garage have carbon monoxide alarms installed.
Carbon monoxide alarms must be UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed and be installed according to manufacturer’s instructions. These alarms should be replaced every five years. The carbon monoxide sensor inside the alarm unit can wear out over time and newer models will benefit from improved technology and upgrades.

Spring and Summer Energy Saving and Cooling Tips

  • Have your air conditioning system tuned-up for the season. This will help ensure your A/C will run at peak efficiency. Operating at peak efficiency will save money because the system doesn’t have to work as hard to do its job.
  • Replace your furnace or air handler filters on a regular basis. Lack of regular filter changes and maintenance is the leading cause of system breakdowns and costly repair bills.
  • If you disconnected the power to your central air conditioning system in the winter, wait 24-hours after turning power back on to the system to run it. Your compressor needs that time to warm-up
  • Keep the thermostat constant. Continuously adjusting the thermostat can be very inefficient. You can, however, raise the thermostat 2-3 degrees during the day while you’re away to save money. For every degree you raise the setting, you can expect to cut energy consumption by up to 3.5%
  • Flip the fan switch on your thermostat into the “fan on” mode when cooling the house. This process will ensure that air is always being stirred to prevent hot and cold pockets from forming.
  • Fully open 2nd floor registers and restrict 1st floor registers to 50%.  This will help even out the temperatures from the first to the second floor of the home.
  • Install awnings or plant trees that will shade southern facing windows. This keeps the hottest rays of the sun from shining directly into the house.
  • Replace older windows with more efficient low-E glass. These windows help reduce the effect of the suns warming rays. Also, keep storm windows closed. The above 3 tips will reduce the heat load gain on your home which means your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to keep the home at a comfortable temperature. This saves money and extends the life of the system.
  • Install and attic fan to help ventilate some of the hot air out of the attic. Attics can reach temperatures of 140-150 degrees and this build of warm air can make the upstairs of a home warmer than it needs to be. This makes the air conditioner work harder to do its job. It costs you more to cool your home and the life of the system can be decreased.

Being Green at Isaac

Isaac Takes Environmental Responsibility Seriously
We believe being green begins with awareness, and opening our eyes to better and more thoughtful service and installation methods that reduce our company's environmental impact, while often enhancing the energy efficiency of your home at the same time.
The greater care and leading-edge procedures we incorporate in our daily work saves you in operating costs, lengthens the life of your home comfort equipment (reducing waste), and helps our environment.
Here are a few of the ways we're greener at Isaac -
  • We recycle and carefully manage all refrigerants(coolants from AC) to prevent release into the atmosphere, potentially harming the ozone, or polluting our air.
  • All our technicians are EPA certified so they know how to recycle these gases properly.
  • We began using soon-to-be mandated environmentally safer refrigerants three years ago, when only 3% of heating and cooling contractors were doing so.
  • We also recycle batteries, copper, steel, iron, wood, capacitors, fan motors, mercury, thermostats, limit controls, paper and cardboard on a regular basis.
  • Recycling boxes are strategically placed throughout all of our offices.

Go Green

Get Green Savings with Isaac
Because our environment matters, Isaac brings you a variety of ideas to save energy and resources while you cut heating and cooling costs in your home.  It's a great way to be good to the environment....and your wallet!

High-Efficiency Heating
  • 10 year-old furnaces are likely to be only 70 to 80% efficient
  • That means 20 to 30¢ of every energy dollar is being wasted
  • Today's furnaces are 95% efficient
Call us today to find out how you can save hundreds of dollars annually with a high-efficiency, high-quality furnace

Geothermal Heat Pumps
  • Utilize the earth's ability to store heat and turn it into significant fuel savings and cut your electric use by up to 72% (compared to electric resistance heating)
  • Extremely energy efficient systems can reduce the cost of heating, cooling and hot water expenses to as low as $100 per month for a 2,000 square-foot home
  • No noise concerns or outdoor condensing units
  • As energy costs rise, you'll save even more while your payback time decreases
Regular Cleanings and Safety Inspections
  • A typical home A/C system that's low on refrigerant by 1/2 pound will lose 25% in efficiency, increasing electricity use correspondingly
  • Leaks in A/C systems allow greenhouse gases to escape into the air and reduce your system's efficiency
  • Dirty heating systems cost more to run and increase energy consumption
  • Our Seal of Security Protection Plans offer annual cleanings, precision tune-ups and safety inspections to help your home become as energy efficient as possible
  • Save money on service calls, labor and parts while ensuring optimal efficiency from all of your heating and cooling systems
Tankless Water Heaters
  • New, tankless water heating systems by Navian and Rinnai heat water on demand instead of constantly heating as with a traditional tank system
  • Get greater energy efficiency (save up to 40% on energy costs) and reduce your home's energy footprint†
  • Navien units are up to 98% energy efficient and eliminate over 85% of flue gas wasted by standard water heaters, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by at least 420lbs. per unit per year
  • Save, on average, $160 on water heating costs per year*
  • Tankless units last two to three times longer than traditional water heaters, creating less metal and glass that must be recycled or placed in a landfill**
Variable-Speed Blowers
  • New variable-speed blowers use one-sixth the energy of older blowers when connected to your forced-air system
  • If you run the fan all year for circulation, you could save up to $150 in electricity costs - and cut consumption - on blower operation alone
Water Purification
  • Get bottled-water quality for as little as three cents per gallon!
  • Filter out potentially harmful pollutants and odors while providing great tasting H2O
  • Save significantly over bottled-water purchases and reduce plastic consumption and waste
  • 25% of all large U.S. public water systems contain traces of one or more toxic substances, so purification makes sense for your family
Programmable Thermostats
  • Benefit from energy savings combined with improved comfort and convenience
  • Stop wasting energy and dollars when you are away from home or during sleeping hours
  • With proper use, typical savings on heating/cooling costs average 10% per year††
  • More environmentally positive than traditional thermostats, as they contain no mercury and are eco-friendly
